Eric Adams (Democratic Party) is the Mayor of New York. He assumed office on January 1, 2022. His current term ends on January 1, 2026.

Adams (Democratic Party) ran for election for Mayor of New York. He won the general election on November 2, 2021.

Adams is a former Democratic member of the New York State Senate, representing District 20 from 2006 to January 1, 2014. Adams resigned to become borough president of Brooklyn.

Biography

Eric Adams was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York City in 1960, and he was raised in Bushwick and in Jamaica, Queens. At the age of 15, he and his brother were arrested for criminal trespassing, and he was severely beaten by the NYPD and left with PTSD; this experience motivated him to join the NYPD and change the department from within. Adams both served as a patrolman and as a civil rights activist, but he was also controversial for attacking the 1993 Comptroller candidate Herman Badillo by claiming that, if the Puerto Rican Badillo cared about the Hispanic community, he would have married a Hispanic woman. Adams mounted an unsuccessful Democratic bid for the US House of Representatives in 1994, and he was a registered Republican from 1997 to 2001. In 2006, he ran for State Senate as a Democrat, serving until 2013, when he was elected Brooklyn Borough President. Adams supported gay rights, opposed “stop and frisk”, advocated for making two-year CUNY colleges free, and opposed gentrification (divisively telling new white residents to “Go back to Iowa. You go back to Ohio!” while saying that the city’s original residents were there before Starbucks was. On 17 November 2020, he announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City, and he became the frontrunner during the weeks before the June 2021 Democratic primary, overtaking Andrew Yang’s early lead. However, he was again the subject of controversy when it was reported that he had lived in his Fort Lee, New Jersey co-op throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, rather than living at his Bedford-Stuyvesant home. On 6 July 2021, the Associated Press declared Adams the winner of the June 2021 Democratic mayoral primary, in a primary tantamount to an election.

2017

Kings County in New York held a general election for borough president and district attorney on November 7, 2017. Kings County is also known as the Borough of Brooklyn. A primary election was held on September 12, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates in this election was July 13, 2017. Adams filed to run as a Democratic and Working Families Party candidate.

Incumbent Eric Adams (D) defeated Vito Bruno (R) and Benjamin Kissel (Reform) in the Brooklyn borough president general election.

2012

Adams ran in the 2012 election for New York State Senate District 20. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012. He also ran on the Working Families Party ticket. Adams defeated Rose Laney (R) and Brian Kelly (C) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.

Issues

On March 28, 2010, Adams announced a billboard campaign focused on getting young men to pull up their pants. Using $2,000 in campaign funds, Adams paid for six billboards around Brooklyn that featured two young men with sagged pants and the phrase, “Raise your pants, raise your image.”

When he unveiled the prototype for the billboard, Adams explained, “When you raise your pants you raise your character. When you raise pants your raise your grades. When you raise your pants you raise your self-esteem. Then you raise how you feel about yourself.”

Adams stated that he was not seeking law against sagged pants, but reached out to school boards to establish a standard dress code.
