Hargett worked for Rural/Metro, an emergency services provider in the private sector. He was working as the corporation’s Vice President for the Southern Region, at the time of his appointment as TRA chairman.

Politics

Hargett worked in the Tennessee House of Representatives representing District 97 (Bartlett and Memphis) from 1996 to 2006. He was elected twice as a Republican Leader by his colleagues. Hargett was then nominated to the position of Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA) chairman in 2007. TRA sets the rates and service standards of privately owned telephone, natural gas, electric, and water utilities. He was later confirmed by the Tennessee General Assembly and worked from February 2008 to January 2009, being succeeded by Dr. Kenneth Hill.

2009 to 2019

The state legislature’s new Republican majority voted to replace longtime Secretary of State Riley Darnell with Hargett in January 2009. He then instantly resigned from his position as TRA chairman and took office as secretary of state on January 15, 2009. Tre stated he was in favor of keeping the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general in September 2017. As well as the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, inside the Tennessee State Capitol. Tre then supported legislation that would make it possible to find voter registration groups that submitted incomplete voter registrations. Critics then charged that the legislation was intended to reduce the registration of new voters. However, he denied that the bill was intended to reduce the registration of black voters.

2020 to present

During the COVID-19 pandemic in Tennessee in 2020, Tre opposed allowing voters who fear catching or spreading the coronavirus to vote by mail in the 2020 elections. However, his position was overruled by a state judge, holding that Tennessee must allow a vote by mail for all voters. As well as the restrictions on the vote by mail that he sought to impose were ”an unreasonable burden on the fundamental right to vote guaranteed by the Tennessee Constitution. It was reported on June 18, 2022, that he had been arrested for DUI following leaving the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
