Who Is Jeremiah Wright?

Jeremiah Wright ( Jeremiah Alvesta Wright) is an American pastor emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He led the church for over 36 years. During his tenure as the pastor, the membership grew to over 8,000 parishioners.

Career

Prior to becoming a pastor, he was in the United States Marine Corps, where he was a 2nd Marine Division attaining the rank of private first class. However, after two years with the Marine Corps, he decided to join the United States Navy in 1963 and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. After that, he was then trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He was then assigned as part of the medical team charged with the care of President Lyndon B. Johnson. He left the position in 1967.

He was born and raised in Germantown, Philadelphia to Jeremiah Wright Sr and Mary Elizabeth Henderson. His father was a Baptist minister who was the pastor of Grace Baptist in Germantown from 1938 to 1980. Career as a Minister

On March 1, 1971, Wright was appointed as pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. At that time the church had around 250 members, but only approximately 90 of them were actively attending service at the time. Moreover, despite the challenges Trinity United Church of Christ had grown to become the largest church in the predominantly white United Church of Christ denomination by March 2008.

United Church of Christ President and Minister General John H. Thomas said, “It is vital that we all express our gratitude and support to this amazing congregation, to Jeremiah A. Wright for his 36-year leadership.” Moreover, Thomas, a member of the Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Cleveland, also preached and worshiped at the Trinity United Church of Christ (last time March 2, 2008).

Jeremiah together with Trinity was profiled by correspondent Roger Wilkins in Sherry Jone’s documentary Keeping the Faith broadcast on the June 16th, 1987, episode of the PBS series Frontline with Judy Woodruff. Jeremiah, who is the founder of Trinity United Church of Christ’s “Ministers in Training” program, has been a national pioneer in promoting theological education and seminary preparation for African-American churches.  The church’s mission statement is founded on systematized black theology, which began with James Hal Cone’s writings.

Jeremiah is a professor at Theological Seminary, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, and other educational institutions in Chicago. Furthermore, he also served on the boards of trustees of the University of Virginia Union, Chicago Theological Seminary, and Chicago City Colleges. Moreover, he has also served on the Board of Directors of the Evangelical Health System Administration Committee, Black Theology Project, New Horizons Center, Malcolm X School of Nursing, and other religious and civic groups.

Moreover, Jeremiah attended a Frederick G. Sampson lecture in Richmond, Virginia in the fall of the 1980s on GF Watts’ painting Hope. The lecture inspired him to give a sermon in 1990 based on the painting’s theme: “With his clothes in rags, his body full of scars, bruises and bleeding, his harp almost shattered and with only one string, he had the audacity to make music and praise God … to take the only string he has left and have the audacity to wait … this is the very word that God wants us to hear from this passage and from Watt’s painting. ”

Moreover, after Obama heard Jeremiah’s sermon, he changed the word “audacity to hope” to “audacity of hope,” which he used as the title of his 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote address and his second book.
