Early career

In 1978, while still in high school, he was the guitarist for a Glasgow punk band titled The Drains. Innes met Alan McGee and Bobby Gillespie when they joined the band. Following the band’s end, he together with McGee shortly joined the band H2O and then moved to London. In London, they formed the Laughing Apple, a band that recorded 3 songs in 1981 and 1982. Two of the songs were launched on Autonomy, and the 3rd was put out on their own Essential record label.

Revolving Paint Dream

As McGee went on to form Creation Records and the band, Biff Bang Powl, Andrew formed Revolving Paint Dream with his then-girlfriend Christine Wanless in 1983. The band launched 2 singles and 2 albums between 1984 and 1989 on Creation. Innes and McGee contributed to the recording of each other’s bands.

Primal Scream

While still a member of Revolving Paint Dream, he joined his former bandmate, Bobby Gillespie, in Primal Scream as second guitarist in 1987. Innes first appeared on their Sonic Flower Groove LP, and with each subsequent recording, he has contributed songwriting and production work as well as guitar work and various instrumentation.
