TobyMac, aka Kevin Michael “Toby” McKeehan, was born October 22, 1964, in Fairfax, Virginia. He has always been a man driven and committed in every area of his life, whether it’s as a husband, father, performer, songwriter, and producer, businessman or President of Gotee Records.
And while he’s “arrived” by anyone’s standards, the Grammy nominations, gold records, and number one singles haven’t slowed him down one bit. He’s as committed today as a “success” as he was as a new face in Christian music.
Growing up in the VA suburbs adjacent to DC, he remembers falling in love with the beats, rhymes, and production of early rap. “I remember hearing a Kurtis Blow/Trouble Funk song on the radio and going to a local record store, and they didn’t have it.
Since I couldn’t drive yet, I took the Metrorail into downtown DC and found a store that had that song; I bought the Sugarhill Gang’s Rappers Delight that day as well. From there, it just caught fire. I fell in love with hip-hop music.”
