Did you know that Bayelsa State alone produces roughly 290,000 barrel per day (bpd) of crude oil?
This shows that Bayelsa is contributing over $23million (N37.2billion) at $80 (N129,600) per barrel in just 1 day as revenue for the Federal Govt of Nigeria and the IOCs.
NOTE: At today’s naira to dollar exchange rate
When you multiply this by 30 days, it means Bayelsa is contributing over $696million (N1trillion) per month and $8billion annually to the national coffers and the IOCs.
While Bayelsa gets just $18million to $22million (N30 – N37billion) per month as the case may be and $229million (N371.39 billion) annually as Federal allocation.
Bayelsa has experienced over 3,000 oil spill in the last 4years alone and these spills have affected our ecosystems.
According to health and environmental experts, oil pollution is placing our people at heightened risk of kidney damage, diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson and increase in diarrhoea and child malnutrition etc. But even after oil spill, there is no concerted effort by these multi-national oil companies and the Federal Government to ensure that a proper cleanup is done in those affected areas.
The question is;
Is this amount we are getting from the Federation account fair looking at what we are contributing to the Federation account on daily and monthly basis?
Is it a sin that we are blessed with this natural resource?
