At the time of the audition, he worked at a barbecue restaurant and had already recorded an album called Small Town Boy as an independent musician. American Idol
He attended the bus tour auditions for American Idol’s 13 season in Tuscaloosa. Harris auditioned before the judges in Salt Lake City. His audition performance of ”Soulshine” was well-praised. In the group rounds, he joined with the season’s final winner, Caleb Johnson for a performance of Alex Clare’s ”Too Close”. Prior to advancing to the semi-finals, he was among a few contestants paired together for an impromptu sing-off. Harris was then paired with Casey Thrasher, and the judges intended to only put one of them through to the following round. However, after singing ”Whipping Post” both contestants impressed the judges and they were put through.
In the semi-finals, he failed to earn enough votes to automatically advance into the finals. Harris was kept in the competition when the judges chose him as a Wild Card. Critics noted that he struggled with the pitch in some of his performances but he earned mostly positive attention for his participation in the series.
Harris reached the Top 10 together with Dexter Roberts, a friend he had already known for several years from the Alabama music scene. The pair auditioned together in Tuscaloosa. Harris borrowed Robert’s guitar for that audition, as his own had broken a string during the wait in line. Following completing in 6th and 7th place respectively, Harris and Roberts returned to the American Idol stage for the season 13 finale, where they performed together alongside Darius Rucker.
