Who is Amanda Burton?

Irene Amanda Burton is a Northern Irish actress, well known for her television roles such as Heather Haversham in the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside. She has also played Beth Glover in Peak Practice, Sam Ryan in the BBC crime drama collection Silent Witness. Additionally as Katherine Maguire in the ITV detective collection Marcella, Clare Blake in The Commander, and Karen Fisher in Waterloo Road.

Despite being well-known for her roles on television, Amanda had worked exclusively in the theatre. This was before landing the role of Heather Haversham in Channel 4’s Liverpool-based flagship drama series Brookside. She started to lose sympathy with her character and left after almost four years in the role, in which time Heather had become of the show’s most popular residents of Brookside Close. After leaving she got other television works which include guest appearances in various peak-time drama collections. They included Minder, Inspector Morse, Medics, Stay Lucky, Boon, Van Der Valk, and Lovejoy.

Amanda starred together with Kevin Whately in Peak Practice in 1993. She also played the position of Doctor Beth Glover in the medical drama collection, based in Derbyshire’s Peak District, for three series till her departure in 1995. Burton got the main role of Professor Sam Ryan in the BBC drama Silent Witness in 1996. The movie was highly acclaimed and she played the role until 2004. Later she took the position of Prosecutor Helen West in a collection based on Frances Fyfield’s novels. She portrayed Aunt Polly in a 2003 remake of Pollyanna and Commander Clare Blake in Lynda La Plante’s drama The Commander.

Burton performed in the sixth series of BBC drama Waterloo Road as the new headteacher, Karen Fisher in 2010 and left the show in 2011. Later she played in BBC1’s Celebrity Masterchef and made it through to the semi-finals. In Autumn 2016, Amanda portrayed the gangster’s wife Cherie Le Saux in the ITV drama The Level. In 2020 she had a leading role as crime family matriarch Katherine Maguire in the third season of Marcella.

Burton is currently divorced. While at Manchester School of Theatre, Amanda met theatre technician Jonathan Hartley. They married in 1976 but later divorced in 1982. In 1989, she married professional photographer Sven Arnstein and was blessed with two children. However, the couple divorced in 2004.
