1993-2005: Child acting and breakthrough
Amanda started acting professionally at the age of 7, appearing in a television advertisement for Buncha Crunch candies. She appeared on stage in versions of Annie, The Secret Garden, The Music Man, and The Sound of Music during her childhood. Bynes later attended a comedy camp at the Los Angeles Laugh Factory and was spotted by a Nickelodeon producer. She was then cast by the network on the sketch comedy series All That, where she performed various roles from 1996 to 2000. Bynes starred as Penny Pingleton, a sheltered young girl, in the musical comedy movie Hairspray in 2007. The movie was a critical and commercial success and premiered in more than 3,000 theaters, the largest debut for any musical movie. It went on to become her most successful movie at the time, and together with the rest of the cast were acclaimed for its performance. Bynes received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Acting Ensemble and got a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2008, among others. Once again her mother received conservatorship. Byens was then diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and paperwork for her conservatorship was filed to extend it until August 2020. She later 2018 stated she had been sober for four years with the assistance of her parents, and apologized for everything. Bynes mentioned that she was into other substances such as cocaine and MDMA but mostly abused the ADHD prescription medication Adderall.
