Who is Barry Hearn?

Barry Maurice William Hearn OBE is a well-known English sports promoter and founder and chairman of promotions company Matchroom Sport. Through Matchroom, he is also involved in many sports including snooker, darts, pool, tenpin bowling, golf (see PGA EuroPro Tour), table tennis, and fishing.

Currently, he is the chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation and until July 2010 he was chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). Until July 2014, he also was the chairman of Leyton Orient F.C.

A Snooker Career

While looking for property investment in the early 1970s, Barry bought a snooker hall in Romford, Greater London. That same year, the BBC began promoting snooker on BBC2 in color television, thus resulting in queues of people wanting to play snooker. For this reason, he and his business partner Deryck John Healey then bought Lucania Billiard Halls which formed the basis of his future career thus promoting snooker via color television. In 1974, he began promoting sporting events working with amateur snooker players Geoff Foulds father of Neal Foulds, and Vic Harris. He went on to become manager of Steve Davis in 1976 who went on to win the World Championship six times.

In the 1980s, he prospered from the snooker boom when he formed Matchroom with players Davis and Tony Meo. Later Matchroom snooker players include Terry Griffiths, Dennis Taylor, Willie Thorne, Neal Foulds, Jimmy White, Cliff Thorburn, and Ronnie O’Sullivan. Barry went on to appear alongside many Matchroom players in the video for “Snooker Loopy” a hit for “rockney” pop rock duo Chas & Dave. After Sir Rodney Walker failed to get re-elected and left his post, in December 2009, he was elected as the new WPBSA Chairman. Following a vote by the members, he took over a 51% controlling interest in the organization’s commercial business World Snooker Limited in June 2010 with a view to revitalizing the game.

A Boxing Career

In 1987, Barry moved into boxing were his first promotion was the Frank Bruno versus Joe Bugner bout in October 1987 at White Hart Lane. Since then he has promoted many leading British and Irish boxers including; Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Lennox Lewis, Naseem Hamed, Steve Collins, and Herbie Hide. On October 22, 1994, he withdrew his boxers Herbie Hide and Steve Collins from the High Noon in Hong Kong event at the last minute when promoter John Daly could not come up with the purses. In April 2008, he introduced the Prizefighter series, a knockout tournament featuring 8 different boxers. Currently, his son Eddie manages the boxing side of the business.

A Darts Career

Besides snooker and boxing, he is the chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, one of darts’ two governing bodies. In 1992, the sport had been split since the world’s leading players left the British Darts Organisation. However, Barry has made several attempts to buy out the rival body which would reunify the game but has been unsuccessful.

A Football Career

From 1995 to 2014, he was the chairman of the football league club Leyton Orient. Before taking over, the club was in a financial crisis due to the collapse of the then chairman Tony Wood’s coffee business in Rwanda at the time of the Rwandan genocide. However, Barry’s intervention and financial input assured the club’s future. Although he has been successful in stabilizing the club financially.

His period included the club’s longest run in the bottom division (the fourth tier) of the Football League since its creation (in 1958). Leyton Orient Football Club at the culmination of the 2005-06 season earned a promotion to the third tier of English league football (League One). Their first automatic promotion since the 1969-70 season. Barry then resigned as honorary president of Leyton Orient in April 2017 thus registering his disapproval of the new owner, Francesco Bechetti who he claimed had “not played by the rules” leaving Leyton Orient players and staff unpaid for March 2017.

A Fishing Career

In addition to his career, he is an enthusiastic fisherman. After him watching the first recording of Wrestle Mania in Ockenden, he pitched the idea of Fish-o-Mania to Greg Dyke at LWT. However being turned down, he sold the idea to Sky Sports thus establishing a successful now 19-year television franchise.
