Who Is Bill de Blasio?

He is an American politician and the 109th mayor of New York City. In addition, he is a member of the Democratic Party. He has been serving as mayor since 2014, from 2010 to 2013 he was serving in the office of New York City Public Advocate.

He began his career in politics as an elected official in the 39th district in Brooklyn in 2002. Bill held the position until 2009.

Career

He started his career in 1984 when he was working for the Urban Fellow Program at the New York City Department of Juvenile Justice. Three years later he was hired as a political organizer by the Quixote Center in Maryland in 1987. At this time he had just graduated from school at Columbia. Moreover, during the Nicaraguan Revolution in 1988, he flew to Nicaragua with the Quixote Center for ten days to help distribute food and medicine.

In addition, Bill was a staunch supporter of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, the country’s dominant socialist government, which was opposed by the Reagan administration at the time. De Blasio returned to New York City after returning from Nicaragua, where he worked for a non-profit foundation. Moreover, in the foundation, he emphasized more on improving health care in Central America.

In 1994, he was appointed by Charles Rangel to be his campaign manager during his reelection bid. His experience was growing rapidly as he was appointed by then-President Bill Clinton to serve as regional director for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for New York. In that capacity, he was also going to serve in New Jersey

As the highest-ranking HUD official in the tri-state region, he supervised a small executive team and participated in outreach to residents in poor housing. He was elected to the Brooklyn School District 15 board of education in 1999. The following year, he was the campaign manager for Hillary Clinton’s victorious Senate race in the United States.

2002-2009 New York City Council

In 2001, he decided to vie for an elective position, he ran for the New York City Council’s 39th district. The 39th district includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Kensington, Park Slope, and Windsor Terrace.

The primary was crowded but he emerged top with 32% of the vote. He proceeded to the general election where he won the election with 71% of the vote against Robert A. Bell, a Republican nominee who received 17% of the vote cast. In 2002, he sought reelection for a second term this time garnering 72% of the votes. Moreover, in 2005, he was elected for the third term with 83% of the votes.

Tenure

During his tenure on the City Council, he approved legislation that was going to defend tenants against landlord discrimination.  In addition, he assisted in passing the HIV/AIDS Housing Services Law. The bill was going to improve housing services for low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDs.

Furthermore, De Blasio helped pass the Gender-Based Discrimination Protection Law. The bill was going to protect transgender New Yorkers, as well as the Domestic Partnership Recognition Law. Which ensures that same-sex couples in a formal partnership can enjoy the same legal privileges as heterosexual couples in New York City.

2009 election

De Blasio Declared his bid to run for the position in November 2008, joining a race that had so many candidates vying for the Democratic party ticket. Soon after announcing his candidacy, he was endorsed by The New York Times. Moreover, he was also endorsed by the then Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, former Mayor Ed Koch, Mario Cuomo, a former governor, and Reverend Al Sharpton.

On September 15th, 2009, he emerged as the first one in the primary with 33% of the votes while. Since he didn’t reach win the majority they went for a runoff of which he won with 62% against his competitor Green who only got 38 % of the vote cast. After proceeding in the General election, he faced Alex Zablocki whom he defeated with 78% of the vote cast to 18 %.

After winning the elections he was sworn in as New York City’s third Public Advocate on January 1st, 2010.

Mayor Of New York from 2014

He declared his bid to run for the mayoral position on January 27th, 2013 In the fall of the election. The race consisted of nine candidates. These candidates included; Council Speaker Christine Quinn, former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner, and former New York City Comptroller and 2009 mayoral nominee Bill Thompson.

In August 2013, the de Blasio campaign aired a television ad. Moreover, in the ad his son Dante, who was 15 years at that time, discussed his father’s aspirations to “‘truly break from the Bloomberg years.’” It was dubbed “The Ad That Won the New York Mayor’s Race” by Time, which noted that “de Blasio built a steady lead that he never surrendered” after it aired. Moreover, on the other hand, Quinn was targeted by a variety of organizations, notably NYCLASS, with their “Anybody But Quinn” campaign, which helped de Blasio gain ground in the polls.

De Blasio went on and won the September 16 primary election with 40.1% of the vote which exceeded the required 40.0% of the votes. After that, he proceeded to the general election where he faced a Republican nominee Joe Lhota. In the general election, he took the early win and defeated Joe with 72.2% of the vote cast. However, at the time, the voter turnout was reported to be low since only 24% of the voter turn out for voting.

After serving for the first time, he was re-elected for a second term in 2017. During the 2017 election, he defeated Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, with 65.2% of the votes.
