In 1978, after moving to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, Houston worked at the Sydney Christian Life Centre in Darlinghurst, becoming the assistant pastor to his father Frank. He began a church on the Central Coast in 1980 and served at a church in Liverpool in 1981. Houston then hired the Baulkham Hills Public School hall in Sydney’s north-western suburbs to begin a new church, the Hills Christian Life Centre in 1983. The first service was held on Sunday, August 14, 1983. He was later appointed the president of the Assemblies of God in Australia in May 1997, following the retirement of Andrew Evans. Houston then assisted to create the Australian Christian Churches network of Pentecostal churches in February 2000. The alliance represented around 20,000 regular attenders in affiliate churches and he was its inaugural president. Additionally, he is a member of the Australian Pentecostal Ministers Fellowship (APMF).
Brian is an executive producer for Hillsong Music Australia (HMA), the music ministry of Hillsong Church. 2018 to present
Hillsong then left the Australian Christian Churches to become an autonomous denomination, identifying itself more as a global and charismatic church in September 2018. The parting was amicable, according to both Hillsong and ACC. New South Wales Police issued a warrant for Houston’s arrest on August 5, 2021, alleging that he concealed child sexual abuse by his father, Frank. At the time of being charged, he was in the United States and resigned from the church’s board as a result of his arrest. He resigned from his role as senior global pastor in March 2022, following an internal investigation into his conduct with two women connected to the church. It was revealed that he had engaged in inappropriate behavior with both women in 2013 and 2019.

Sexual abuse by Frank Houston
Frank Houston, Brian’s father stepped down from the role of senior pastor at Sydney Christian Life Centre on May 10, 1999, and Houston was appointed to the position. He said that Frank ”appeared rushed” to hand his church to him. This was prior to the revelations of Frank’s child sexual abuse becoming known. In 2014, Brian spoke at hearings held by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse fifteen years later. He said that he received an allegation in October 1999 that his father sexually abused an Australian boy. His statement and evidence submitted to the commission revealed that in November 1999, his father confessed to child sexual abuse.
Brian reportedly forced his father into retirement and did not go to the police. The commission censured Houston for his failure to report the sexual abuse allegations against his father. For his failure, he avoided a clear conflict of interest in investigating his own father while serving as national president of the Assemblies of God in Australia. NSW Police issued a warrant on August 5, 2021, for Brian to attend the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on October 5. They were alleging that he concealed child sexual abuse from his father. He was in the U.S. at the time of being charged and resigned from the church’s board due to the arrest. Brian said that he intends to plead ”not guilty” at the trial.
