Ivan Simon Cary Elwes is a professional English actor and writer. He is recognized for his leading movie role as Westley in The Princess Bride (1987), Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the Saw movie series.

Film
Cary made his acting debut with Marek Kanievska’s movie Another Country in 1984. The film was loosely based on the English boarding school exploits of British spies Philby, Burgess, and MacLean. He portrayed James Harcourt, a gay student. Elwes then played Guilford Dudley in the British historical drama movie Lady Jane, alongside Helena Bonham Carter. He was later cast as a stable-boy-turned-swashbuckler Westley in Rob Reiner’s fantasy-comedy The Princess Bride (1987), based on the novel of the same title by William Goldman. The film was a modest box office success, but got critical acclaim, receiving a score of 97% on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has become a cult classic, since being launched on home video and television.
Cary went on to work steadily, playing dramatic roles including in the Oscar-winning Glory (1989) and comedic roles such as in Hot Shots! (1991). He also played a rival driver to Tom Cruis in Days of Thunder (1990). Elwes starred as Robin Hood in Mel Brooks’s comedy, Robin Hood: Men in Tights in 1993. Cary Elwes was born in Westminster, London to Dominic Elwes and Tessa Kennedy. His father was a portrait painter and his mother was an interior designer and socialite. His parents divorced when he was four years old and his stepfather, Elliot Kastner, was an American film producer and the first American to start independent film production in the U.K. Elwes was raised as a Roman Catholic and was an altar boy although he did not attend denominational schools as most of the men on his father’s side including his father. His father died of suicide when Elwes was aged 13. Elwes belongs of English, Scottish, Irish, Croatian-Jewish, and Serbian descent.
Cary’s paternal grandfather was the portrait painter Simon Elwes, whose own father was the diplomat and tenor Gervase Elwes (1866-1921). His other grandfathers consist of the diplomat Rennell Rodd, 1st Baron Rennel, and industrialist Ivan Rikard Ivanovic. His maternal grandmother Daska McLean, has a second husband Billy McLean who was an operative for Special Operations Executive during World War II.

Cary made his first TV appearance as David Lookner on Seinfeld in 1996. After two years he portrayed astronaut Michael Collins in the Golden Globe Award-winning HBO miniseries From the Earth To the Moon. He was then nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for his portrayal of Colonel James Burton in The Pentagon Wars directed by Richard Benjamin the next year. In 1998, Elwes guest-starred as Dr. John York in an episode of the television series The Outer Limits. Elwes played serial killer Ted Bundy in the A&E Network movie The Riverman in 2004. In 2009, Elwes played the role of Pierre Despereaux, an international art thief, in the fourth-season premiere of Psych. He came back to Pysch, reprising his role in the second half of the fifth season again in the show’s sixth season in 2010, and again in its eight-season premiere.
Elwes portrayed Hugh Ashmeade, Director of the CIA, in the second season of the BYUtv series Granite Flats in 2014. He was then cast as Arthur Davenport, a shrewd and eccentric world-class collector of illegal art and antiquities in Crackie’s first streaming network series, The Art of More in May 2015. The series explored the cutthroat world of premium auction houses, debuting on November 19, and was picked up for a second season. He later played Larry Kline, Mayor of Hawkins in April 2018, for the third season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, premiering in July 2019. Car’s voice-over work consists of the narrator in James Patterson’s audiobook The Jester. As well as characters in film and TV animations including Quest for Camelot, Pinky and The Brain, and Batman Beyond. Other projects
Cary co-wrote the screenplay for a movie titled Elvis & Nixon in 2014, about the pair’s famous meeting at the White House in 1970. The movie, which starred Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey, was bought by Amazon as their first theatrical feature and was launched on April 22, 2016.
Lawsuit
Elwes filed a lawsuit over Evolution Entertainment, his management firm and producer of Saw in August 2005. He said that he was promised a minimum of 1% of the producers’ net profits of the film and did not receive the full amount. The case was then settled out of court. He would not come back to the series until 2010 when he reprised his role in Saw 3D.
