Who is Chris Owens?
Chris Owens was an American performer, club owner, and entrepreneur who based her act out in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the U.S. Owens was a French Quarter fixture and celebrity from the beginning of the 1960s to the early 21st century. She was recognized in Louisiana and throughout the South. Tourists visiting Bourbon Street could not miss huge posters of Owens wearing costumes as they walked by her nightclub. She was recognized as ”Queen of the Vieux Carre”.
Chris Owens career
Owens opened a nightclub on St. Louis Street in the French Quarter after she married car dealer Sol R. Owens. The nightclub was initially intended to be a low-key sideline establishment, but later business exploded. After they realized her performance numbers were a huge draw, they sold their home in 1977 and bought the building on the corner of St. Louis and Bourbon. Soon after the ”Chris Owens Review” became a noted actor in town.

Later Sol had a heart attack and died in 1979. Owens then took over management of the club and of the 30 apartments and four shops located within the building. The club and Owens’ act continue to be a draw as of 2016. She hosted a yearly Easter Parade that goes on to roll throughout the French Quarter. Owens can be seen in the 1962 movie The Wacky World of Doctor Morgus (see Morgus the Magnificent). She started production of her first feature movie, Let’s Ballroom in 2003. In the film, she stars as a wealthy widow who falls in love with her dance instructor.
Honor
Owens was inducted into the New Orleans Musical Legends Park with a statue created in her likeness on April 22, 2006. Her image stands beside other musical greats such as Pete Fountain, Irma Thomas, Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint, Ronnie Kole, Al Hirt, and Louis Prima.
