Sanford and Son from 1972 to 1977 and other acting projects.
After he has appeared on All in the Family as a robber, together with Cleavon Little, they won the role of Lamont Sanford in the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son. However Johnny Brown was the one who was initially considered for the role, but due to his commitment to Laugh-In Demond got the role. Wilson portrayed Lamont throughout the whole course of the program, and when Redd Foxx walked off the set in 1974 over a financial disagreement with the producers, his character was written out for the remainder of the season, Wilson became the show’s star. Foxx comeback the followed year and the pair worked together. However, in 1977, the show was canceled and from 1980 to 1981 Foxx tried to revive the show with a short-lived sitcom Sanford, but Wilson refused to reprise his role for the new series.
In 2014, when he was asked if he kept in touch with Foxx who died in on October 11th, 1991, he responded by saying he only saw him once before he died in 1983. “I was playing tennis at the Malibu Racquet Club at the time, and some producers contacted me about doing a Redd Foxx 50th Anniversary Special. I hadn’t spoken to him since 1977, so I dialed the number for the club where (Redd) was performing. We met in Redd’s office, but he wasn’t very friendly.
That was a poor idea, I informed those men. I never had a disagreement with him. In my book (Second Banana, Wilson’s memoir of the Sanford years), people say I’m protective of Redd Foxx.
Because I had a million-dollar deal with CBS to make Baby… I’m Back!, I felt no anger toward Foxx (for departing the program in 1977). My dissatisfaction was that he didn’t come to me about throwing in the towel; I discovered out from a news presenter in the NBC corridor. I forgave him and loved Redd, but that was something I never forgot. There was love in the air. You may observe it by watching any episode.”
Furthermore, he has also appeared in the film Full Moon High in 1981, Me and the Kid in 1993, and Hammerlock in 2000.
