Dr. Doyin Okupe (born March 22, 1952) is a Nigerian physician and politician who co-founded Royal Cross Medical Centre and served as the National Republican Convention’s National Publicity Secretary (NRC).
He was initially jailed by General Sani Abacha and disqualified from participating in UNCP primaries; afterward, he ran for governor of Ogun State as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Doyin Okupe was a spokesman for former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a previous governorship aspirant in Ogun State under the Peoples Democratic Party platform in 2003 before being appointed by former President Jonathan in 2012.

Okupe worked for a number of years in government and private hospitals, including St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, before founding the Royal Cross Medical Centre (also known as Royal Cross Hospital) in Obalende, Lagos, with colleagues Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Ladi Okuboyejo. Royal Cross Medical Centre’s Managing Director (MD) was him.
According to Olusegun Osoba, in a July 2019 interview with The Nation (Nigeria), Okupe and Dr. Seyi Roberts saved the life of his gatekeeper from a gunshot wound to the head on the night of August 23, 1994.
Career In Politics
Okupe was a House of Representatives candidate for the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the 1983 Nigerian parliamentary election during the Second Nigerian Republic.
Okupe became the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention in the Third Nigerian Republic (NRC). He was one of the NRC’s observers at the National Electoral Commission’s headquarters during the collation of the results of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election (NEC).
On October 3, 1996, Okupe was detained by the military administration of General Sani Abacha. Later, during Abacha’s aborted transition program in March 1998, he was among the politicians barred from running in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries.
Okupe was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo at the start of the current Fourth Nigerian Republic. Later, in 2002, he ran for governor of Ogun State as a candidate in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primaries and was a major contender alongside Gbenga Daniel. Okupe was appointed as President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs in 2012.
At various periods, Okupe served as a publicist for PDP presidential candidates in Nigeria, including President Olusegun Obasanjo, President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In July 2017, he declared his desire to leave the PDP and join the Accord Party, however, the Accord Party fired him in September 2018 after he accepted the position of Chairman of Bukola Saraki’s Campaign Media Council for the PDP’s 2019 presidential primary.
He later rejoined the PDP and became a spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential contender in the 2019 Nigerian presidential election.

Prosecutions and Controversies
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigated Okupe and his companies in August 2012, accusing them of failing to complete road construction contracts awarded to them by Benue and Imo states in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
Imo State eventually struck an agreement, while Benue State’s issue was handled through arbitration.
The EFCC linked 702 million of the $2 billion embezzled in the $2 billion armaments deal or Dasukigate at the office of the National Security Adviser under Colonel Sambo Dasuki’s command to Okupe in July 2016.
The EFCC charged Okupe before a Federal High Court in Abuja on 14 January 2019 with a 59-count allegation of suspected money laundering and diversion of funds totaling N702 million.
