Who Is Francis Chan?
Francis Chan is an American Preacher, Protestant author, and teacher. Chan is the former teaching pastor of the Cornerstone Community Church. The church is in Simi Valley, California and it was founded in 1994 by Chan.
In addition, Chan is also the founder of Eternity Bible College, which was founded in 2004. Furthermore, he served as its early chancellor until 2010. He has been a board member of several Christian and Social justice organizations such as Children’s Hunger Fund and Gospel for Asia. Moreover, Chan has also authored and co-authored several books such as Crazy Love, it was A New York Times bestseller. In addition, he has also served as the ambassador for care for children.
Career
After completing his seminary degree in getting a job as a youth pastor in Chatsworth, California, at the Church at Rocky Peak. In 2009, in Christianity Today reporting, Chan characterized that period where he was not leaving his personal life consistently with his religious ideas. He cited that those were the worst years of his life. However, he later left the job as pastor for a reason that was never known, to work at a restaurant, waiting table. Prior to becoming a Senior pastor, he had worked in different retail and fast-food jobs.

He was born in San Francisco to Pak-sum Chan and Wan-bing Mui. His father was a minister at the Leighton Road Baptist Church in Hong Kong while his mother was a Bible woman of the Hong Kong Baptist Church, Caine Road. However, his mother died during his childbirth due to excessive bleeding.

Cornerstone Community Church
Together with his wife Lisa and 30 others, they founded the Cornerstone Community Church in 1994. By the time the church was 2 months, it has grown to have 100 members attending the services. Cornerstone continued to grow day by day and by 2000 they received approval from local officials to expand the building to be able to hold twice the capacity of members. By January 2008, Cornerstone was one of the largest churches in Ventura County, California.
Chan stated he felt challenged to sacrifice more for God after taking a three-month break from Cornerstone in 2008. He went further and gave up approximately half of his earnings. Chan didn’t take a salary from his church and donated the majority of his book profits, which amounted to approximately $2 million, to various organizations. It’s all donated to groups that help sex slaves in other nations. In addition, in 2008 it was declared that cornerstone would give away 55% of its income to charitable causes.
Furthermore, With only 100 students, Chan founded Eternity Bible College in 2004 as a ministry of Cornerstone Community Church. Eternity began an international program in Ecuador in 2008. The college had 47 graduates serving in various regions of the world as of 2009. On the Sunday of April 18th, 2010, he announced to his congregants that he felt his call to resign.
Coming Back to San Francisco
In June 2011, he said that he felt called to San Francisco, CA. He relocated to Northern California and began a church planting network of house churches known as We Are Church. After that, he joined the board of elders of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship in 2014. After two years he already left the board in August 2016. He worked as a top-level leader in the We Are Church network until 2020.
Return to Hong Kong
Chan returned to Hong Kong in 2020. He was living and working in Sham Shui Po, which is the city’s poorest district. It was also the location where his mother used to perform ministry in the 1950s.
Return To United States
Furthermore, in January 2021, Chan confirmed that together with his family was going to come back to the US. This was after his Hong Kong Visa was declined. He went further and stated his intentions of returning back to Hong Kong when it’s possible.
Theology
Most of the time he speaks of what the Bible is really saying and leaves our life in such ways. Moreover, according to a certain author, he is not afraid of confronting “lukewarmness” in Christian life.
