Fred Ward, Frederick Joseph Ward, was a famous American actor and producer. He had a long and wide career, beginning with a role in an Italian television film in 1973. Ward had roles in films including Escape from Alcatraz, Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks. As well as Henry & June, The Player, Swing Shift, and Short Cuts.

The 1970s and 1980s
Fred became an actor following studying at Herbert Berghof Studio and in Rome. In Italy, he dubbed Italian films and served as a mime until he made his debut in two Roberto Rossellini movies. In the early 1970s, after returning stateside, he spent time working in experimental theatre and doing some television work. Ward made his first American movie appearance portraying a cowboy in Hearts of the West (1975).
His initial main role was in the Clint Eastwood vehicle Escape from Alcatraz (1979) as fellow escapee John Anglin. Ward was also recognized as a violent National Guardsman in Walter Hill’s Southern Comfort (1981). Fred’s first starring role in a motion picture was Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann (1982). He later starred as astronaut Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff, in the action film Uncommon Valor alongside Gene Hackman, and in the drama Silkwood (both in 1983).
Remo Williams
Following co-starring roles in Swing Swift (1984) and Secret Admirer (1985), Fred played the title hero in the action movie Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, directed by Guy Hamilton. The movie was supposed to be the first of a series based on The Destroyer series of novels. Despite the film being well promoted, with Ward appearing on the cover of various movie magazines, it only grossed $15 million. Ward confirmed that he performed most of the stunts himself. He then played in a few low-budget productions until he went back to major cinema in 1988 as a cop in Off Limits. As well as Roone Dimmick in Big Business, and the father of Keanu Reeves‘s character in The Prince of Pennsylvania.
The 1990s
Ward starred as Earl Basset in the monster film Tremors and as the American erotic writer Henry Miller in Henry & June (alongside Uma Thurman) in 1990. As well as cop Hoke Moseley, whose gun, badge and dentures are stolen, in Ward’s self-produced motion picture Miami Blues (alongside Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh). The same year he played an FBI agent in Dennis Hopper’s movie Catchfire. He went on to play detective H.P. Lovecraft in the 1991 HBO movie Cast a Deadly Spell together with Julianne Moore.
Later, he co-starred in the thriller Thunderheart, the Hollywood satire The Player, the mystery-drama Equinox, and the TV western-comedy Four Eyes and Six Guns. His performance in Four Eyes and Six Guns won him a Cable ACE Award. Ward also did a cameo in Bob Roberts, starring Tom Robbins. His notable leading roles are Lt. Brann in the two-character-thriller Two Small Bodies, and fisherman Stuart Kane in the Robert Altman movie Short Cuts (in which the whole ensemble won a Golden Globe), both in 1993.
As well as a dangerous criminal in the comedy Naked Gun 33+1?3: The Final Insult (1994), the sailor in the French-avant-garde-drama The Blue Villa (1995), and his reprised role in Tremors II: Aftershocks and the Special Agent in Chain Reaction (both in 1996). Ward appeared as Sheriff Bud Phillips in Best Men, as Dave Reimuller in …First Do No Harm alongside Meryl Streep (both in 1997), and as Domenico Venier in Dangerous Beauty (1998).

He was then nominated for Video Premiere Award as the best male for the direct-to-video production Full Disclosure in 2001. Ward also co-starred in Joe Dirt, Summer Catch, Wild Iris, the mini TV series Dice, and the comedic Corky Romano.
Fred co-starred in Sweet Home Alabama, Enough and Abandon in 2002. He then had the starring role in Birdseye and signed in for the TV pilot for the drama Georgetown alongside Helen Mirren, but the series was never made. Following roles in The Last Ride, 10.5, and Coast to Coast (all in 2004), Ward took a brief break from acting. He later came back as a guest in the television series Grey’s Anatomy and ER in 2006 and 2007.
