Who is Henry McMaster?

Henry McMaster is an American politician and attorney. In addition, he is also a member of the Republican Party, and currently, he is serving as the 117th governor of South Carolina.

Moreover, he has also served in the United States Army in his early years. Henry has been serving as the governor since January 25, 2017. Furthermore, as an attorney, he worked for Strom Thurmond a US Senator, in private practice. He has also served as a state attorney for the district of South Carolina under President Ronald Regan.

Career

Early Political Career

Following Thurmond’s endorsement, he was appointed US attorney for the District of South Carolina in 1981. After his nomination, he was approved by the Senate on May 21st, 1981. Since then he headed the South Carolina Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee until 1985.

Moreover, during his time in office, he managed to create the federal drug task force. The task force was called Operation Jackpot to investigate South Carolina, marijuana smugglers. This operation yielded fruits and arrested over 100 people for crimes related to Marijuana and hashish trafficking.

Throughout the operation, McMaster conducted many news conferences and earned attention through interviews and comments. However, his activities were condemned as political, with writer Lee Bandy stating, “no one can recall any previous U.S. attorney being so public-relations savvy,”. In addition, the writer said that McMaster had conducted more press conferences and issued more press releases than all of his predecessors combined. His tenure expired on December 31, 1985.

Election Bid

After completing his tenure in 1985, the following year he decided to run for an elective position. She managed to win the Republican nomination. After that, he faced Ernest Hollings in the general election. He was defeated by Ernest Hollings with 63.1% to 35.6% of the vote cast.

McMaster again decided to run for lieutenant governor in 1990. In the Republican primary, he won against Sherry Shealy Martschink by 51.46% to 48.54%. However, he was defeated again by the Democratic incumbent. He earned 41.19% against Nick Theodore’s 440,844 votes 41.19% to 58.75%.

However, despite being defeated, he was nominated to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education by Governor Carroll A. Campbell Jr. in 1991. After that, he was approved by the South Carolina Senate. Stil in 1991 he became a member of a nonprofit South Carolina Policy Council’s Board of Directors until 2004. Moreover, in the general election, he faced the Democratic nominee, Stephen K. Benjamin. He defeated him by receiving 55.5 % to 44.5%. In addition, after completing the first term, and the second term he was re-elected unopposed in both primary and general elections in 2006.

Governorship Race

In 2010, Henry decided to run for a gubernatorial position with the Republican ticket. However, his ambitions were cut short after he finished fourth in the Republican nominations. He received 16.9% of the votes. After being defeated in the primary he immediately supported Nikki Haley, a state representative.

After Haley took the office, he appointed Henry to the South Carolin Ports Authority. He took over from Harry Butler Jr. He served in that office for four years and he left in 2015 and Kurt D. Grindstaff took it from there.

South Carolina Lieutenant Governor

On March 27, 2014, he declared his bid to run for Lieutenant governor. In the primary election, he received 44% of the vote cast which led to a runoff against Mike Campbell, son of Carroll A. Campbell, a former governor.

He went ahead and Defeated Mike with 63.6% of the vote cast. Moreover, after proceeding to the general election, he faced Democratic State Representative Bakari Seller in the general election. Henry defeated Bakari, on November 4th, 2014 general election with 58.8% of the vote.

He was elected on a different ticket from Governor Haley. This was the last time a lieutenant governor was elected in that manner. In 2018, the governor and lieutenant governor run for the same ticket.

Governorship

Donald Trump, a then-president announced his intention to appoint governor Haley as Ambassador to the United Nation. Haley was appointed and approved by the Senate on January 24, 2017. After that, she stepped down and Henry took over as the new governor of South Carolina.

By the time he was sworn in he was 69 years old and after 8 months he was the oldest person to ever assume the office of the governor. He completed Haley’s term which expired in January 2019.

2018 Election

Having declared his bid to seek reelection back in September 2016, he leads the Republican primary with 42.3% of the votes. However, he didn’t get the majority and he was forced to go for a runoff against John Warren. He won the runoff which was held on June 26th with 52% of the vote cast.

McMaster appointed entrepreneur Pamela Evette as his running mate rather than incumbent Lieutenant Governor Kevin L. Bryant, who campaigned against McMaster for the governorship. Trump-backed McMaster. McMaster won the general election with 54 percent of the vote, defeating Democratic nominee James Smith.
