He moved to San Francisco after a period of time working at a corporate law firm to work in the technology industry. There, he serves as a principal at Peter Thiel’s venture capital firm, Mithril Capital. In 2016, he published Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture Crisis. In 2016 and 2017, the memoir was on The New York Times Best Seller List. Moreover, it was a finalist for the 2017 Dayton Literacy Peace Prize. The memoir received various acclaims as The New York Times called it “one of the six best books to help understand Trump’s win”.
In addition, The Washington Post called him the “voice of the Rust Belt”. William Easterly, a West Virginia native, and an Economist, criticized the book “Sloppy analysis of collections of people-coastal elites, flyover America, Muslims, immigrants, people without college degrees, you name it—has become routine. And it’s killing our politics”. Vance indicated in December 2016 that he planned to move to Ohio to start a nonprofit and potentially ruin for office and work on combating drug addiction in the Rust Belt.
He joined Revolution LLC, in 2017 as an investment partner. Vance became a CNN contributor in January 2017. And signed on to direct a film version of Hillbilly Elegy in April 2017, which was released by Netflix in 2020. In addition, starred Owen Asztalos and Gabriel Baso as Vance. He co-founded Narya Capital in 2019, in Cincinnati, Ohio, with financial backing from Eric Schmidt, Marc Andreessen, and Peter Thiel. Whereas in 2020 raised $93 million for the firm.

A Politics Career
J.D. Vance was critical of Republican Party nominee Donald Trump during the 2016 election. In February 2016 in a column in USA Today Vance wrote “Trump’s actual policy proposals, such as they are, range from immoral to absurd”. He opposes abortion as he was asked whether abortion laws should include exceptions for rape and incest. In response, he stated, “two wrongs don’t make a right”. This, therefore, led Ohio’s largest anti-abortion group, Ohio Right to Life, to endorse him before the 2022 United States Senate primary election in Ohio.
Consideration and Announcement
He was reported in early 2018 to have been considering a bid for U.S. Senate as a Republican running against Democrat Sherrod Brown, but he declined to run. He expressed his interest to run for the Ohio State seat in April 2021 after the seat was vacated by Republican Rob Portman. To support him to run for the 2022 U.S. Senate election in Ohio, Peter Thiel has given $10 million to Protect Ohio Values, Robert Mercer also gave an undisclosed amount. He launched an exploratory committee in May 2021, and officially entered the race in July 2021. His run in April 2022, was endorsed by Donald Trump.
