Who Is Jay Bakker?

Jay Bakker (Jamie Charles “Jay” Bakker) Is an American author, pastor, and speaker. In addition, he is the son of famous televangelists, Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker Messner.

When he was in his teenage years, Jay was disappointed by mainstream Christianity, becoming particularly critical of Christian fundamentalism and the Christian right. However, despite him being disappointed by mainstream Christianity, he adopted a much more liberal form of Christianity, and it was at this point that he became the co-founder of Revolution Church, which was created in 1994 in Phoenix, Arizona.

He then preached in Revolution’s Atlanta site before pastoring the New York City branch of Revolution Church in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Moreover, in Brooklyn, services were held inside the bar and venue Pete’s Candy Store. But Bakker later moved to Minneapolis in 2013 and began pastoring another version of Revolution Church there.

Most of his story was retold in a documentary on Sundance Channel known as One Punk Under God: The Prodigal Son of Jim and Tammy Faye. Furthermore, his story has also been retold in Time Magazine.

Jay authored a book, Son of a Preacher Man: My Search for Grace in the Shadow in 2001. The book was an autobiography that details his youth, relationship with his parents, the PTL scandals, and the founding of the Revolution Church.

On the Sundance Channel in 2006, he was portrayed in the six-part documentary One Punk Under God. Furthermore, he has also been featured in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Time, The Economist, FHM, and New York Magazine, and has appeared on Larry King Live and The Joy Behar Show (August 23, 2011).

Together with co-author martin Edlund in 2011, wrote a book entitled Fall to Grace: A Revolution of God, Self, and Society. The book outlines the radical, transformative, and inclusive nature of grace. Furthermore, it challenges Christians to reassess their understanding of salvation, and motivate non-believers to see Jesus with fresh eyes.

During an interview with Barbara Walters on an episode of American Scandals with Barbara Walters (which aired on Investigation Discovery on December 14, 2015)he was asked, about growing up in the aftermath of his famous father’s fall.

Political and Social Views

Jay has urged for an open inclusive Christianity that embraces those with alternative lifestyles and encourages doubt and uncertainty. Furthermore, Jay has also shown his support for homosexual marriage and advocated for the church’s acceptance of the LGBTQ community. He has also called into question orthodox conceptions of atonement and redemption.

After he was asked if he was part of a liberal sect of Christianity by Larry King, he responded by saying he was more liberal than most. Moreover, Jay went ahead and criticized the role of politics in religion, claiming that it hinders civil debate on issues such as homosexuality and abortion. To commemorate the legalization of homosexual marriage in Minnesota, his church served rainbow-colored communion bread.

Who are His Parents?

He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker. He was born in a Christian family where his parents were televangelist pastors. At the age of 12, in 1988 his father was charged with eight counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy. All these counts resulted in him being jailed for six years in federal prison.
