Who Is John Suthers?
John Suther is an American politician and lawyer, who served as the mayor of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Prior to being Mayor, he served as the Attorney General of Colorado, U.S. Attorney for Colorado, and Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections. In addition, he also served as Fourth Judicial District Attorney. Moreover, he is a member of the Republican Party.
Career
Early Career
Suthers worked as a deputy and chief deputy district attorney in Colorado Springs from 1977 to 1981. From 1979 to 1981, he led the district attorney’s office’s Economic Crime Division and co-wrote a book on consumer fraud and white-collar crime. Moreover, during his tenure as a municipal prosecutor, he handled crimes ranging from drunken driving to first-degree murder, and from shoplifting to robbery.

Suthers joined the Colorado Springs law firm, Sparks Dix, P.C. as a litigation partner in 1981. Moreover, he served with the law firm until 1988, when he defeated an incumbent to become the Fourth Judicial District’s elected district attorney. From 1994-1995, he was president of the Colorado District Attorneys Council.
John came back to Sparks Dix in 1997 as senior counsel as the head of the firm’s litigation division at the end of his second term. In 1998, he ran for Attorney General and was defeated 47.4% to 50% by Ken Salazar.
Suthers was appointed executive director of the Colorado Department of Corrections in January 1999 by Governor Bill Owens. As the director, he managed a department of 6,000 employees and an annual budget of more than $500 million.
In addition, John has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver School of Law and a scholar in residence at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. John was appointed as US Attorney for the District of Colorado by President George W. Bush in August 2001. After that, he was overwhelmingly confirmed by the United States Senate and took office the week before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
During his term as U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, he spearheaded the state’s anti-terrorism operations and prosecuted a number of high-profile white-collar crimes, including charges against Qwest officials.

After Ken Salazar was elected to the United States Senate. Governor Owens went ahead and was nominated and he has then approved State Senate as the 37th Attorney General of Colorado in January 2005. During election, he defeated his Democratic opponent, Stan Garnett, in the 2010 election by a 13-point margin, which was the largest margin of victory in a two-way race in Colorado that year. After serving as Attorney general for the longest period he decided to run for mayor. Moreover, he was elected on May 19, 2015, as Mayor of Colorado Springs. In the race, he defeated former mayor Mary Lou Makepeace in a runoff election by 68% to 32% Colorado Springs is the 39th largest city in the United States.
After he took the office, his goals included re-establishing a collaborative relationship with City Council and other governmental bodies in the Pikes Peak region. Moreover, he was going to solve the city’s infrastructure challenges, notably roads and stormwater, and actively encourage new job growth.
Furthermore, his plan to raise sales taxes for five years in order to collect $250 million for road repairs in Colorado Springs was supported by the City Council 8 – 1. Furthermore, voters supported it by a 65% to 35% majority in November 2015. Moreover, the tax was extended by voters again in November 2019 with 65% of the vote.
Colorado Springs approved an amended annexation agreement for Banning Lewis Ranch in April 2018. This opened the way for the development of 24,000 acres that would support the city’s expansion for decades to come.
Moreover, John was awarded the Colorado Governor’s Citizenship Medal in December 2015. This is the highest award offered to a Colorado citizen, in recognition of his service as Attorney General and his efforts as Mayor to put Colorado Springs on a “very good trajectory.”
