2017-2018: Early work
Jonathan got his initial onscreen role in the ABC miniseries When We Rise while still a student at Yale. He portrays real-life gay activist Ken Jones in the series, he met with Jones prior to playing his character as part of his research for the role. Majors played in his first feature movie role as Corporal Henry Woodson in the revisionist Western movie Hostiles, the same year. The movie was written and directed by Scott Cooper and had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2017. On September 10, 2017, it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
He had more roles in the 2018 movie White Boy Rick and Out of Blue. Both the movies were screened at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The latter competed for the Platform Prize.

Majors gained popularity after starring in Joe Talbot’s critically acclaimed independent feature film The Last Bleck Man in San Francisco in 2019.
