Who is Josh Hawley?
Josh Hawley ( Joshua David Hawley) is an American politician, attorney, and former professor. He serving as the junior US senator from Missouri since 2019.
Prior to being the senator, he served as the 42nd attorney general of Missouri for two years from 2017 to 2019. In addition, he is a member of the Republican Party. He defeated two-term incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in the 2018 election.
Career
After graduating from law school, he was hired as a law clerk where he spent two years, clerking for Judge Michael W McConnell of the US Court of Appeals for Tenth Circuit. He clerked for Michael between 2006 and 2007. After that, he clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court from 2007 to 2008.
He was then hired in the private sector as an appellate litigator at the law firm Hogan $ Hartson, he worked there for three years from 2008 to 2011. After that, he worked for the Becket Fund for religion Liberty in Washington D.C. from 2011 to 2015. While working at Becket he was writing briefs and gave legal advice in Supreme Court cases.
In June 2013, he was a serving member of the Blackstone Legal Fellowship, which is funded b Alliance Defending Freedom. The organization was headed by a church that is designated an anti-LGBT hate group.
Serving as Attorney General of Missouri
2016 election
In 2016, he decide to run for the position of attorney general of Missouri. During his preparation for the campaign, he managed to raise $9.2million. In addition, he was provided by David Humphreys, who is the CEO of Joplin-based Tamko Building Products. In the primary, he faced Kurt Schaefer on August 2nd. He went on to win the election with 64% of the votes.
After he won the primary, he proceeded to the general election, where he faced Teresa Hensley. Josh went and defeated Teresa with 58.5% on November 8.

United State Senate
2018 Elections
Josh declared his bid to run for the US Senate in October 2017, under a Republican ticket. This was after he had formed an exploratory campaign committee in August 2017. During the primary, he faced 11 competitors who were hoping to unseat McCaskill. In addition, he received endorsement from very prominent leaders such as Mitch McConnell, Majority Leader. Moreover, he also received endorsement from President Donald Trump and the Senate Conservative Fund. As a result of all this endorsement, he won the primary with a huge margin.
During the campaigns, Obamacare was a major issue both candidates promised to ensure protection for preexisting conditions. Moreover, Josh was criticized by McCaskii due to his participation in a lawsuit that could end insurance protections for people with pre-existing conditions by overturning the affordable care act. Moreover, he was also condemned by both Republicans and Democrats for initiating his Senate campaign less than a year after he was sworn in as an attorney general. While responding to the allegation he said at the time, he was running for attorney general Senate was not on his mind.
Moreover, during the campaigns, he released his wife and his tax return to the Public. After release, he went on and challenged McCaskill to release her and her husband’s tax return. McCaskill went ahead and released her tax returns which she files differently from her husband.
Furthermore, after a long tight competition in the November 2018 general election, he defeated McCaskill with 51% of the votes while McCaskill received only 46% of the votes.
Tenure
After winning the election, he was sworn in on January 3rd, 2019 as the new Senator of the United State. As a serving senator, he visited Hong Kong together with senator Ted Cruz during the Hong Kong protest in October 2019. While in Hong Kong they spoke in favor of protest.
In addition, he announced the National Security and Personal Data Protection Act on November 18, 2019. The act was going to prohibit American companies to store user data or encryption keys in China. However, Engadget, realized that the bill may cause problems for companies that have legally stored data in China such as Apple and TikTok. Moreover, the bill was not the first technology bill that Josh had proposed, he had also proposed the ban on the loot boxes in gaming and also restricted network features.
Josh joined Donald Trump’s hand when he urged for the increase of the initial $600 coronavirus which was provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. According to him and Trump they were proposing to be increase to $2000, this put him on the same side as Bernie Sanders who is unlikely to be his ally.
On February, 8th, 2021 he was the only senator who voted against the nomination of Denis McDonough for Secretay of Veterans Affairs. In addition, he was the only Senator to vote against all of Joe Biden’s cabinet nominees. However, he voted in for Cecilia Rouse, who he confirmed as Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers.
