Who is Kal Penn?
Kalpen Suresh Modi popularly known as Kal Penn is an American actor and former White House staff member in the Barack Obama administration. Penn is known as an actor for his role as Lawrence Kutner on the TV show House, and the character Kumar Patel in the Harold & Kumar movie series. He is additionally known for his appearance in the movie The Namesake and has taught as a visiting lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania in the Cinema Studies Program.
Kal joined the Obama administration as the principal Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement in April 2009. This facilitated that his character, Lawrence Kutner, be written out of House. He shortly left his post in June 2010 to film the third installment of the Harold & Kumar series, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, going back to his White House job upon the film’s completion.
Kal left again in July 2011 to take up a role in the TV series How I Met Your Mother. He portrayed Seth Wright in the political drama Designated Survivor, serving as a consultant on the show from 2016 to 2019. Kal’s feature movie debut came in 1998 in Express: Aisle to Glory. Since then he has appeared in American Desi, Van Wilder, the final episode of The Lonely Island, Dude, Love Don’t Cost a Thing. Also in Malibu’s Most Wanted, Where’s the Party, A Lot Like Love, Superman Returns, The Namesake, Epic Movie, the Harold & Kumar series, and an uncredited performance in Deck the Halls. In January 2007, he performed in the spoof comedy Epic Movie as well as the TV program Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He received the Asian Excellence Award in May 2007, for Outstanding Actor for his performance in The Namesake. Kal joined the cast of the Fox medical drama House as a fellowship applicant in late 2007.
E! reported that Kal had signed on as a regular on the program together with Olivia Wilde and Peter Jacobson, which was confirmed in the plot of the episode ”Games”. He had a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother for the seventh season of the program, playing Kevin, a therapist and later boyfriend of Robin Scherbatsky. Kal hosted Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius on the Discovery Channel, beginning May 1, 2013. He joined the cast of We Are Men in 2013. After one year he was cast in Ravi Kumar’s film Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, a movie about the Bhopal gas tragedy, which was considered to be the world’s worst industrial disaster by many.
2016 to present
Kal portrayed Detective Fontanelle White on the CBS comedy-drama Battle Creek, which was later canceled in its first season. He started a regular role in the ABC drama series Designated Survivor as Seth Wright in October 2016. Penn portrayed a White House speechwriter who initially served under the previous president’s administration in the film. After the death of the White House Press Secretary in the pilot episode and the acting press secretary left the job, his character gets promoted to the Press Secretary. He additionally worked as a political consultant for the series, and the program was renewed by Netflix for a third season, launched on June 7, 2019.
Kal has shown some interest in serving in Indian cinema, especially in Gujarati cinema. He was cast in the main role of Garrett Modi on the NBC comedy Sunnyside on March 7, 2019, and the series was ordered on May 6, 2019. Penn became an advocate for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2007 and 2008 and a member of Obama’s National Arts Policy Committee. He played in the Barack Obama-supporting video ”Si Se Puede Cambiar” by Andres Useche. Penn appeared alongside comedian George Lopez at ”We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial” on January 18, 2009.
