Who is Keith Ellison?

Keith Ellison is an American Politician and attorney serving as the 30th attorney general of Minnesota. In addition, he is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL).

As an attorney, he began his career after completing law school where he was hired by Lindquist & Vennum law firm. Keith worked for three years in the firm as a litigator specializing in civil rights, employment, and criminal defense law. After that, he became an executive director of the nonprofit Legal Rights Center in Minneapolis. Moreover, the center was dealing with the defense of indigent clients.

He later left the Legal Right center and joined the private sector at Hassan & Reed Ltd law firm. At the law firm, he was specializing in trial practice.

Keith declared his intention after his predecessor Martin Olav Sabo announced his retirement. After that, won May 6, 2006, party endorsement at the DFL. On the first ballot, he won 2-1 and on the fourth ballot, he won the endorsement. During the primary, he challenged Ember Reichgotott Junge, a former state senator, Paul Ostrow, and Sabo’s chief of staff Mike Erlandson, who had endorsement from Sabo.

Keith won the 12, September 2006 primary with 41% of the vote. After that, he faced Republican Alan Fine, a Green Party nominee in the general election of which Keith won the seat with 56% of the vote cast.

Keith managed to win the Democratic primary in August, receiving 49.8% of the vote. Moreover, after he won the primary, he went on to face the Republican nominee, Doug Wardlow.

Keith went on and won the general election for attorney general with over 100,000 votes. Being elected in the position, he became the first black American to be elected. In addition, he was also the first Muslim person to hold that position.
