Professional sports
Oakland/ Las Vegas Raiders
Mark inherited the team after the death of his father, Al Davis, in 2011. Together with his mother, Carol, they own a 47 percent share of the Raiders. This is contractually structured to grant them controlling interest, and he has day-to-day control of the team.
Relocating to Las Vegas
Davis got control of the team towards the end of the Raiders’ lease with the Oakland Coliseum. This was a facility started in 1965 and had multiple issues due to its age, being the only one that still housed both the Major League Baseball and NFL team, a major point of contention for both leagues. Davis then decided to construct a new stadium for the Raiders, a problem his father was not able to solve as the owner. He started communicating with representatives in other cities including San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, after he lacked a stadium plan.
Mark stated that the Raiders would pursue a shared stadium with Carson, California, with the San Diego Chargers and Dean Spanos. Spanos’ and Davis’ proposals directly competed and eventually lost to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke and his proposed stadium in Inglewood. Davis was actively working towards a resolution in Oakland until after the Carson vote. After Carson’s plan failed due to the lack of a credible plan from Oakland, following a dispute over rent in Oakland where the city raised the rent on the team, Mark started exclusive discussions with Las Vegas.
Davis first teamed up with Sheldon Adelson to get a stadium in Las Vegas although after funds were acquired for the stadium, Adelson was cut out of the deal. The NFL officially approved the Raider’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas in a 31-1 vote, ensuring them a new stadium in the process on March 27, 2017.

He stated that discussions to buy the Aces began shortly after he suggested to MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle, that the players should get paid more during a game.
Before he made a formal bid, he met with Aces forward A’ja Wilson to gauge her thoughts about him taking over the team. Briefly, after the purchase of the team, the ground was broken on a training facility for the Aces in Henderson next to the Raiders facility. His form of management is in stark contrast to his father, who was recognized as one of the most hands-on owners in professional sports. Al Davis exercised near-complete control over both business and football matters until his demise. This was after he became general manager of the Raiders in 1966 after his comeback. Al remained head of football operations after becoming principal owner in 1972.
Domestic violence in the NFL
Mark spoke out on the issue of domestic violence in the NFL, after San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald’s arrest on August 31, 2014. Davis went public again in March 2015 on the issue, shutting down rumors that the team began negotiations with Greg Hardy, who was earlier that year convicted on domestic abuse charges. The Raiders’ organization has traditionally been alert about domestic violence issues, directly involving the Tracey Biletnikoff Foundation. It was created by Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff to support community substance abuse treatment and domestic violence programs.
Player protests, and Social Justice
Davis spoke publically on the controversial National Anthem protests in the NFL, where the players kneel during the playing of the pre-game National Anthem to protest police brutality and social injustice against African Americans. He initially preferred his players to stand. Mark abstained from an NFL owner resolution on the anthem protests in May 2018. It called for players to stand or stay in the locker room till after the anthem is played or face a team fine for kneeling, locking arms, or raising their fists. He abstained together with San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York after speaking out on social justice issues to the other owners.
Recently Mark made comments about Jon Gruden‘s emails and his resignation. He stated that the emails that came out are not what the Raiders stand for and so Jon Gruden is no longer head coach of the Raiders.
