She made her screen debut starring in an STV docudrama as a nine-year-old alongside Tom Conti. At the age of 13, she was awarded the BBC Young Entertainer of the Year award on the kids’ TV show, Going Live!. Next at the age of 14, she was cast in the role of Trish McDonald in the Scottish soap opera Take the High Road. She went on to appear in the Sky One series Dream Team. Afterward, she spent three years in the BBC daytime soap opera, Doctors as Jude Carlyle.
After her exit from Doctors, years later she admitted that she did not know how she coped with the series due to the medical terminology. She surprised herself when her brain “managed to take in all the information of the doctor jargon”. However, she used her knowledge and experience from Doctors when she came into contact with a pregnant woman in labor who had collapsed and was bleeding. About the experience, she explained: “She was really panicking about losing the baby, obviously. For some reason, maybe because of Doctors, I was very calm”.
She went on to leave the series for a role as an undercover journalist posing as a police officer PC Andrea Dunbar in The Bill. In July 2006, she appeared in EastEnders as Gemma Clewes, the mistress of Max Branning (Jake Wood). Next, she appeared in The Shepherd: Border Patrol with Jean-Claude Van Damme in July 2008, where she played Ramona Gracia. The next year, she played a counselor in the BBC school drama Waterloo Road. It was later announced in 2009 that Natalie had joined the cast of Emmerdale as part of a new farming family, the Bartons. On July 17, 2009, she made her Emmerdale debut as Moira Barton.
