Who Is Pete Buttigieg?
Pete Buttigieg is an American politician currently, serving as the United States Secretary of Transportation. He has been serving in that position since February 3, 2021.
Pate is a member of the Democratic Party. In addition, he served as the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from 2012 to 2020. Moreover, after graduating, Pete served for several months as a policy and research expert for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign in Arizona and New Mexico. In addition, after taking Kerry’s campaign job, he turned down Barack Obama’s offer for his 2004 United States Senate campaign. Moreover, in 2004 he became a conference director of the Cohen Group.

Pete joined the US Navy Reserve through the direct commission officer (DCO) program. After that, he was sworn in as an ensign in naval intelligence in September 2009.
During his mayoral tenure in 2014, he took a seven-month leave to deploy to Afghanistan. He did some of this at Bagram Air Base, but he also served as an armed driver for his commander on more than 100 excursions into Kabul.

In November 2011, Pete was elected mayor of South Bend with 10,991 votes out of 14,883 polled (74% ). In addition, he is the second-youngest mayor in South Bend history (Schuyler Colfax III became mayor in 1898 when he was 28 years). He is also the youngest incumbent mayor of a U.S. city with at least 100,000 people at the time when he took office in January 2012.
Furthermore, prior to assuming the office as mayorJiha’d Vasquez, a 16-year-old black teenager, was discovered hanging from an electrical tower on April 14, 2011. According to Vasquez’s mother, Stephanie Jones, numerous items were gone from his backpack, which was found on the ground near his corpse.
The coroner, Chuck Hurley, who did not have medical experience, declared Vasquez’s death to be a suicide. After that, Pete then named Hurley as acting police chief. Moreover, Vasquez’s corpse was burned and no autopsy was performed. Jones sought to persuade Buttigieg to look into her son’s death, but he refused, citing “possible political dangers.”
In addition during his first term as mayor, he sponsored a variety of development and redevelopment initiatives. Furthermore, he also played a huge role in the construction of a nightly laser-light display along the St. Joseph River path in downtown South Bend as public art. The project cost $700,000, which was financed entirely via individual donations.
In 2013, he oversaw the city’s implementation of a 3-1-1 system. In addition, his administration oversaw the selling of a number of city-owned assets. The “Vacant and Abandoned Properties Initiative” was one of Buttigieg’s hallmark projects.
Second term
Buttigieg declared his bid in 2014 to run for re-election in 2015. He defeated Henry Davis Jr., the city councilor from the second district, in the Democratic primary with 78 percent of the vote. In November 2015, he was re-elected mayor for a second term with more than 80% of the vote, defeating Republican Kelly Jones by a margin of 8,515 to 2,074 votes.
After winning the 2015 election, he signed an executive order helping to establish a recognized city identification card. Moreover, South Bend partnered with the Notre Dame Clinical Law Center in a new phase of the Vacant and Abandoned Properties Initiative.
This initiative was going to provide free legal assistance to qualifying applicants wishing to acquire vacant lots. Moreover, in collaboration with local nonprofits, to repair or construct homes and provide low-income homeownership assistance using South Bend HUD (Housing and Urban Development) funds.
