Educational Background And Qualifications
Prof. Femi Soyinka graduated from the University of Heidelberg with a Medical degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 1964 and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1965.
In 1969, he graduated from the University of Giessen with a degree in Dermatology, Venereology, and Allergology and began practicing as a Dermatologist, Venereologist, and Allergologist.
He graduated from Hadassah Medical School in Israel with a Master of Public Health degree in 1972.
Professor Femi Soyinka’s Career
He spent 30 years in academia, holding posts ranging from Chief Medical Director to Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Provost of Obafemi Awolowo University’s College of Health Sciences in Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
In collaboration with the Federal government, international donor agencies, and organizations such as the World Bank, UNDP, DFID, the British Council, and the International Development Research Centre, Canada, he conducted extensive research on Tropical Skin Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Based on his extensive experience in the subject in various parts of the country, he pioneered several types of research in the field of HIV/AIDS and worked as a consultant to various international and local agencies, including the World Health Organization, DFID, UNDP, and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health.
Prof. Femi Soyinka was at the forefront of efforts in Nigeria to reduce the effect of HIV/AIDS. By applying what he’s learned in his study to clinical practice.
He had a tremendous impact not only on the lives of many people and families affected by the sickness but also on the country as a whole.
In Nigeria, he founded the Ambassador of Hope program, which encourages people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) to speak out, raising much-needed public awareness about the disease at a time when knowledge and stigma were both high.

Following that, his non-governmental organization, New Initiative for the Enhancement of Life and Health (NELAH), previously known as Network on Ethics/Human Rights, Law, HIV/AIDS-Prevention, Support, and Care, made significant contributions to the capacity building of indigenous organizations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones (NELA).
He was the former president of the Society for AIDS in Africa, and in 2005, he successfully coordinated the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) in Abuja, Nigeria.

The former Provost of Obafemi Awolowo University’s College of Health Sciences, Ile-Ife, died on Tuesday at the age of 85.
Soyinka died in the early hours of Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at his home in Kukumada Village, Ibadan, Oyo State, according to a statement signed by his son, Ayodele.
