Who is Ralph Torres?

Ralph Torres (Ralph Deleon Guerrero Torres) is an American politician currently serving as the 9th governor of the Nothern Mariana Islands. He took over as the governor after the death of Eloy Inos on December 29th, 2015.

After that, he was elected as governor for a full term in 2018. Before taking over as the governor he was working as lieutenant governor for four years after he was elected in 2014. At the age of 41, he is the youngest sitting governor in the United States.

Political career

Torres was elected to the House of Representatives of the Northern Mariana Islands in 2008. After that, he was elected to the Northern Mariana Islands Senate in 2010, where he served in numerous roles. In addition, he was the head of the Health and Welfare Committee from 2010 until 2015. He was elected Senate President in February 2013.

Career as a Lieutenant Governor

Torres became the lieutenant governor on January 12th, 2015. This was after he won the half tickets in the 2014 gubernatorial election.

After the death of Governor Eloy Inos. Torres was appointed to the new governor of the Northern Mariana Islands on December 29, 2015.

They were targeting to search Torres’ office, house, and car, as well as his brothers’ law company and numerous other companies across Saipan. The investigations were conducted to get evidence of wire fraud, schemes to defraud, conspiracy, money laundering, and unlawful political donations.

After the controversies, The Northern Mariana Islands House of Representatives petitioned for Torres’ impeachment in November 2019. Torres faced more impeachment pressure as evidence grew of his misappropriation of CNMI funds in violation of CNMI procurement laws.
