Together with his wife and other seven members, they began a bible study group in 1980. The group was started at their Saddleback Valley condo, located in Orange County, California. In April of that same year, Rick held the Church’s first public service on Easter Sunday at the Laguna Hill High School Theater, where 200 people attended. Furthermore, the forum was televised live on national television. Moreover, the forum was McCain and Obama’s first joint speech as the presumptive Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.
Rick was appointed to give the invocation at President-elect Obama’s inaugural ceremony in December 2008. Pro-choice and LGBT activists were outraged by the ruling, and both Obama and Rick were chastised as a result. However, Obama disagreed with Warren’s views on abortion and same-sex marriage. But he went ahead and defended his choice of Warren, saying that there should be space for debate on those difficult social issues.
After it was announced that Warren would be the keynote speaker at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Commemorative Service on January 19, 2009, the day before the inauguration, it led to more debate. The Purpose Driven link was a quarterly publication distributed as part of a multimedia bundle. Moreover, the partners confirmed in November 2009 that the journal had not attracted enough paid subscribers. Due to this, the magazine would be discontinued after the fourth issue was published that month.
Purpose Driven
He always taught that one day the publication will become the Purpose Driven philosophy of ministry to individual pastors who named or wrote him in Saddleback’s early days. Furthermore, he developed skills while teaching the material through his involvement with Fuller Theological Seminary’s Institute for Evangelism and Church Growth. Moreover, his best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Church, was published in 1995 by Zondervan. Moreover, the book refined many of the lessons he had learned since he founded the Saddleback Church and perfected them through years of teaching other pastors.
After he shared the “Saddleback Story”, the book made a case for building a church around five purposes ( worship fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism) through what Rick called a ” crowd to core” method of church growth. Moreover, he went ahead and urged churches to reach out to their communities, drew in a crowd, convert visitors to adherents, mature those members into pastors, and send them out on a mission. (From the table of contents of The Purpose Driven Church).
Furthermore, in 2004 over 10,000 churches of various denominations attended a seminar or a conference which was led by Rick.
