Who is Rupert Friend?
Rupert William Anthony Friend is a popular British professional actor, screenwriter, director, and lyricist. Friend initially became famous for his roles in The Libertine (2004) and Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (2005), both of which won him awards for best newcomer.
He then played George Wickham in Pride & Prejudice (2005), Lieutenant Kurt Kotler in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), and Albert, Prince Consort in The Young Victoria (2009). 2004-2009
Rupert played three small roles in a stage production of The Laramie Project when he was in his third year in drama school and was spotted by a casting director. He then made his acting breakout as Billy Downs alongside Johnny Depp in the 2004 movie The Libertine. For his performance in the film, he was named ”outstanding new talent” at the 2005 Satellite Awards. Friend said that working with Depp so early in his career was a great lesson in film acting. Rupert made his stage breakthrough as Mitchell in the UK premiere of The Little Dog Laughed in 2010. He went on with Dennis Potter’s Brimstone and Treacle, in which he played the lead character to good reviews. Friend then starred in the movie The Kid, based on the novel by Kevin Lewis. As the movie involves boxing, he is trained to improve his physical and psychological shape. However, the critical reception of The Kid overall was less than favorable. Friend also starred in a French movie titled Lullaby for Pi, playing a musician named Sam. He then portrayed Thomas Anders, the protagonist of the movie 5 Days of War, in 2011, although it did not receive great reviews.
Friend felt dissatisfied with his career and rethought his overall approach to his work and choosing his projects by 2012. He has, however, dismissed reports in the media that at that time he considered quitting acting entirely. Friend then played the prison psychologist Oliver Baumer in the movie Starred Up in 2013. 2016-2019
Rupert earned worldwide fame as CIA operative and assassin Peter Quinn in the acclaimed political thriller series Homeland (2012-2017), his first television series role. Introduced in season two as a supporting character, Friend’s role became significantly more important as of season three. Friend’s performance earned widespread acclaim and he was nominated for three awards such as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series in 2013. His exit from the series was mourned by the press and fans after his character Peter Quinn died in season six.
Following his involvement in Homeland concluded in 2017, he acted in various comedies. He was then offered the lead role in Paul Feig’s A Simple Favor but declined to play a funny shorter part in the movie instead. The collaboration began with a cameo appearance as an actor playing a drill sergeant in The French Dispatch (2021. It went on with a more substantial role in the upcoming movie Asteroid City. Friend will play a leading role in Anderson’s Netflix project The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which started filming in 2022. The movie is based on the stories by Roald Dahl, whom Friend has described as a hero of his. Following successfully playing a spy in Homeland, Friend was mentioned again as the possible next James Bond when Daniel Craig quit the role in 2021.

2022 and upcoming projects
Rupert then featured as the Grand Inquisitor in Disney+’s series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), an experience he stated he enjoyed and would like to repeat. The role was physically demanding: the Grand Inquisitor’s armor weighed 45 pounds and each day of filming it took a team of makeup artists four hours to apply the makeup and prosthetics needed for the role. Friend will play one of the main characters in the comedy series High Desert, alongside Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon (in production). It was revealed in February 2022, that he would play a lead role in Zack Snyder‘s sci-fi movie Rebel Moon. However, he withdrew from the project due to scheduling issues.
