Illinois Rep. Sean Casten and his family are opening up about his 17-year-old daughter who died overnight on Sunday.
In a post shared to social media, Casten and his family spoke about the late teen, named Gwen, and detailed her last hours of life.
“On Sunday night, we had dinner as a family, and then she went out with some friends for a few hours. When she got home, she said goodnight to Kara and I, texted a friend to make sure she got home OK and didn’t wake up on Monday morning,” the statement said, in part. “The only thing we know about her death is that it was peaceful. And the only lesson we can take from that is to savor the moments you have with your loved ones.”

A Business Career
He began his career working at consultancy Arthur D. Little where he did fuel chain analyses for the company’s chemical engineering group. He then served as the president and CEO of Turbosteam Corporation from 2000 to 2007 which converted emissions from power plants into energy. He and his father, Tom Casten founded Recycled Energy Development (RED) in 2007. RED made its focus on recycling wasted energy and converting energy facilities to cleaner, more economic uses.
It also attempted to make profitable use of waste heat capturing technology, an avenue of electricity generation that attracted interest from a number of startup companies looking to find a “breakthrough” in the technology. An investor in RED 2015 sued the company alleging mismanagement by Sean. Sean in response settled the lawsuit and sold the company in 2016. He then said the allegations against him were untrue and were part of a hostile takeover attempt. In addition, Sean was the founding chairman of the Northeast CHP Initiative. Moreover, he has participated in crafting the bill that became the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a program in the northeast U.S. that attempts to use market forces to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Elections
In September 2017, Sean announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois’ 6th congressional district. In the 2018 Democratic primary, he defeated six other contenders to become the party’s nominee against six-term incumbent Republican Peter Roskam. On November 6, 2018, Sean won the election where he defeated Roskam by a margin of seven points. This race was seen as one that Democrats needed to win in order to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time since the 2010 elections. In the 2016 presidential election, Illinois’ 6th congressional district supported Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton by about 7% points.
Upon being sworn in, Sean became the first Democrat to represent this district since it assumed its present configuration in 1974. From 1949 to 1967, the district had been numbered as the 10th and has been the 6th since 1967. In 2020, Sean was re-elected by defeating former state legislator and gubernatorial primary candidate Jeanne Ives by seven points. In 2022, he faces incumbent Representative Marie Newman, elected from Illinois’s 3rd congressional district in the Democratic primary.
