Who is Sushmita Sen?

Sushmita Sen is a famous Indian actress, model, and the winner of the Miss Universe 1994 pageant. Sen is the first Indian to win the Miss Universe pageant. Previously, she was crowned Femina Miss India 1994 at the age of 18. Following winning the Miss Universe pageant, Sen has worked as a film actress.

Sen received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the comedy film Biwi No. 1 (1999). She was also nominated in the category for her roles in the dramas Sirf Tum (1999) and Filhaal…(2002). Sen’s commercially successful movies consist of Aankhen (2002), Main Hoon Na (2004), and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005). Femina Miss India

In 1994, Sen received the title ‘Femina Miss India Universe, as a teenager receiving the right to compete in the Miss Universe 1994 contest.

At the Miss Universe contest, she ranked third overall in the preliminaries, following Miss Colombia Carolina Gomez and Miss Venezuela Minorka Mercado. She continued to place second, fifth, and third in the following rounds and lastly won the title and crown of Miss Universe 1994. Sen was the first Indian to win the title. Following the Times Group relinquishing the rights to select the Indian representative for Miss Universe, her project, I Am She- Miss Universe India, took over, running it for three years (2010 to 2012). This was then followed by Femina taking over.

In January 2017, Sen appeared among the judges of Missa Universe 2016 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, Metro Malina, the Philippines on January 30, 2017. She was joined by other judges including Cynthia Bailey, Francine LaFrak, Mickey Boardman, Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes, and Miss Universe 1993 Dayanara Torres.

Acting career

The 1990s

Following her reign as Miss Universe, Sushmita became an actress. Sen’s first movie Dastak was in 1996, playing the victim of a stalker, played by Sharad Kapoor. Mukul Dev also starred as the lead actor. Sen starred in the 1997 Tamil action movie Ratchagan. After two years she appeared as Rupali in David Dhawan’s comedy movie Biwi No. 1, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1999. The film was the second highest-grossing film of 1999. In the same year, Sen was nominated for her role in the drama Sirf Tum in the same category. She then appeared in a dance song in the movie Fiza in 2000.

The 2000s

Sem received critical acclaim and box office success for the movie Aankhen, starring alongside Arjun Rampal. The movie co-starred Amitabh Bachchan, Aditya Pancholi, Akshay Kumar, and Paresh Rawal. The biggest success of her career came with the 2004 action movie Main Hoon Na, playing the role of a chemistry teacher who falls in love with Shah Rukh Khan‘s character. The movie grossed a total of ₹ 330,000,000 and was the second highest-grossing movie of that year.

She then played a lawyer in Main Aisa Hi Hoon alongside Ajay Devgan. Sen also starred in a remake of Cactus Flower, titled Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? in 2005. She played the lead, alongside Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Sen then played the leading role in Karma Aur Holi.

The 2010s

Sen played the role of a successful supermodel called Shimmer in Dulha Mil Gaya in 2010, and the film was a moderate success that year. She then appeared in the action-comedy movie No Problem the same year. Sen starred in a Bengali drama movie called Nirbaak in 2015, which was her first movie in the Bengali language in her career.

The 2020s

Sen appeared in Disney Hotstar’s TV Series Aarya in 2020, winning the 2021 Critic’s Choice Award. She then went back for the second season launched in December 2021.
