Whoopi Goldberg is an American professional actor, comedian author, and television personality. She is a receiver of numerous accolades. Whoopi is one of 16 entertainers to win the Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award (EGOT).
She started her career in 1983 with her one-woman show, Spook Show. The show transferred to Broadway under the title Whoopi Goldberg from 1984 to 1985. After recording the show she won Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.
Her film success came in 1985 in The Color Purple film. Steven Spielberg directed the film. Whoopi played a role as Celie who was a mistreated woman in the Deep South. For the role she won Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. In 1990 the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a second Golden Globe Award after her performance in the Ghost movie. In the film, she played the role of eccentric psychic. Whoopi became the most paid actress after she starred in the comedy Sister Act and its follow-up Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993.
She starred in the Broadway revivals of Stephen Sondheim’s musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom on stage. Whoopi was awarded a Tony Award as a producer of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. She took the role of Guinan in the science fiction series Star Trek: The Next Generation on television. Whoopi has won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host in the daytime show The View. She has hosted the Academy Awards ceremony four times.

Uta Hagen trained Whoopi at the HB Studio in New York City. In 1982 she appeared on screen in Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away for the first time. The film was directed by William Farley a San Francisco filmmaker. In 1983 Whoopi created The Spook Show. The show was a one-woman show which involved different character monologues. Director Mike Nichols discovered Whoopi and helped her the show to Broadway. It was renamed, Whoopi Goldberg. The show ran from October 24, 1984, to March 10, 1985. During the show run, it was tapped and broadcasted by HBO as Whoopi Goldberg: Direct from Broadway in 1985.
Whoopi attracted Steven Spielberg during her performance on Broadway. After she played in The Belly Room at The Comedy Store Steven gave her the lead role in his film The Color Purple. The film is based on the novel by Alice Walker. The Colour Purple was released at the end of 1985.
