This also brings me back to Chief MKO Abiola during his famous escape from Nigeria due to threats on his life from the Babangida administration officials, we met in the United States and discussed at lenght. One of my memorable moments was when he finally left the USA to return to Nigeria enruote London, I escorted him to the airport and personally was with him alone until he was seated at his seat in first-class cabin of the British Airways aircraft. This was on September 3rd 1993 and the personal things we discussed unfortunately, I cannot share with anyone because Chief Awolowo said “You get to a stage in life you know so much you say little”, but one of the things Chief Abiola told me that gave me hope for his safety was that on September 5th 1993, he called my house in Washington DC United States and informed me that he was going on to Nigeria and that his fellow Yoruba man who was the second in command in the Sanni Abacha regime (General Oladipo Diya) has assured him a safe return and that this is a new regime and that he should not be afraid because they (Sanni Abacha Administration) will look into the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election situation and either overturn the Babangida’s annulment or recommend a new election. I was hopeful and happy because I knew and thought I could trust General Oladipo Diya. In real life things seldom work out exactly as their designers intended, that is why I was astounded to hear Chief Abiola Declared himself President when siting military administration was still in power. One does not know why he did it, maybe it was entrapment, because based on my discussions with Chief Abiola, I never expected him to do that, because in order to declare himself president, he needs the backing of the entire military and, it’s the entire military that should’ve declared Chief Abiola as the President.
